Shopify or a custom website? How to choose

They solve different problems

This is not really a question of which is better. Shopify is a complete, hosted platform built for selling products. A custom website, such as one built with React and Next.js, is built from the ground up around your business.

Both can look great. Both can rank well. The difference is in what they make easy and what they make hard.

When Shopify is the right choice

Choose Shopify if most of these are true:

  • You mainly sell physical products. Inventory, variants, shipping and taxes are built in.
  • You want to launch quickly. A good Shopify store can go live in weeks.
  • You want to manage it yourself. Adding products and processing orders is straightforward for non-technical teams.
  • You want an app later. A Shopify store can be converted into a mobile app that stays in sync with your products and orders.

The trade-offs: monthly platform fees, transaction fees with some payment providers, app subscriptions that add up, and less freedom when you need something the platform was not designed for.

Shopify is the right choice when selling products is the business. A custom site is the right choice when the website itself is part of what makes you different.

When a custom website is the right choice

Choose a custom build if most of these are true:

  • You sell services, not products. Most service businesses do not need a store engine at all.
  • Speed and SEO are critical. A custom site ships only the code it needs, so it can be extremely fast.
  • You need custom features. Quote calculators, booking flows, client portals, unusual pricing rules.
  • You want full ownership. No platform rules, no forced upgrades, no per-sale platform fees.

The trade-offs: a higher upfront build cost, and changes beyond simple content edits usually need a developer.

The middle ground

You do not always have to choose. Some businesses run a fast custom website for their brand, content and services, and use Shopify behind the scenes for the shop. Others start on Shopify and move to a custom build once they outgrow it.

Whatever you choose, make sure the domain, the store and every account are registered in your name, not your developer's.

A quick decision guide

  1. Selling products, want to launch fast? Shopify.
  2. Selling services, want leads and strong SEO? Custom website.
  3. Selling products and planning an app? Shopify, then convert it to an app.
  4. Need features no platform offers? Custom website.
  5. Not sure? Start with what you sell today, not what you might sell in five years.
